1904 Rugby Caps

Overview

Rugby caps dated to 1904 are prepared for display

Rugby caps are a traditional soft, round, cloth cap with a peak, historically awarded to rugby union players to commemorate their appearance in an international match. Originating in the 19th century, particularly in British sport, these caps were often made of velvet or wool and embroidered with the date and opponent of the match. They were typically team-coloured and sometimes featured a tassel on top. While no longer routinely given for every match, the rugby cap remains a symbol of honour and recognition, often awarded for a player's first international appearance or for reaching significant milestones.

These two caps are dated to 1904 and are constructed with silk velvet with metal cords between the panels.
