Condition
Challenges
- Balancing visitor access to bright, open domestic interiors with the need to protect light-sensitive collection material
- Working within a historic house environment where daylight levels vary across rooms and display areas
- Providing practical recommendations based on spot readings, while clearly explaining the limitations when interpreting short-term data vs long-term monitoring
Treatment
Project activities
- ICS undertook a site visit and met with National Trust staff to understand display conditions and priorities
- Light, UV, temperature, and relative humidity readings were taken across key display spaces
- Collection items most sensitive to light exposure were identified
- Spot readings were reviewed to identify higher-risk display areas and likely cumulative exposure levels over time
- ICS prepared a report with practical recommendations for display rotation and light management
Outcome
This assessment provided the National Trust with a clearer basis for planning the display of archival material at one of their prized historic properties. Through analysis of environmental data, ICS delivered scientifically supported recommendations to ensure the preservation of the Everglades historic displays and interiors for years to come. Through regular rotation of sensitive works more regularly or strategically utilizing window shades and curtains, these measures support the long-term care of the collection while helping the site continue to present engaging exhibitions.
