Petersen Fountain

Overview

The elegant Petersen Fountain is named for its benefactor, Carsten Heinrich Petersen Petersen

The Danish businessman who called Ballarat home in the early 1900s. Commissioned in 1922, the Petersen Fountain has been vandalised numerous times throughout its life.  The beaks of the storks have been broken off several times, and the bronze stork above the fountain has been stolen twice.

ICS was engaged by the City of Ballarat in 2022 to undertake a comprehensive survey of Ballarat’s public art. The survey identified the Petersen Fountain as being in a very poor state. Major conservation works were undertaken by ICS in 2025 to restore the fountain toits original appearance.
