South Eveleigh's Locomotive Workshop

Overview

South Eveleigh’s 1880's-built Locomotive Workshop building is one of the NSW’s most significant heritage buildings.

Opened in 1887 by the New South Wales government for the maintenance and manufacture of steam locomotives, it continued to operate until 1988. For over a hundred years, the Workshop was the largest and most technologically advanced blacksmiths’ workshop in the Southern Hemisphere.

From 2018-2022 Mirvac redeveloped the site to provide bespoke retail space and approximately 23,000 square metres of modern infill office, whilst retaining much of the original building, machinery and fittings.

Project activities

ICS was commissioned by Mirvac to conserve the large collection of very large machinery (over 100 items, weighing from 2 tonnes to27 tonnes), along with the extensive assortment of heritage tools, primarily blacksmith tools.

In addition to the machines and tools, ICS provided consulting and collections advice, and undertook a range of treatments and assessments, including Suthos Shed, the Water Tower, the Turntable, the Crane Train, Gantry, Gabion Arches, and the Traverser.

Outcomes

The collection of machinery and assortment of heritage tools have all been conserved for display and are now proudly displayed around the precinct as an integral part of telling the story of South Eveleigh.

Two intact operating bays remain, where Eveleigh Works teaches blacksmithing using much of the largest collection of operating Victorian blacksmithing equipment in the western world.
