ABC Studios, Old Parliament House, Canberra

Overview

The ABC studios within Old Parliament House, Canberra, served as the home for the ABC’s parliamentary broadcast team from 1946-1988.

The historically tight studio space allowed for the broadcasting of debates, drama and the day-to-day business of parliament and gave Australians a chance to hear democracy in action. Today, they are a part of the Museum of Australian Democracy (MOAD) who commissioned ICS to prepare the ABC Studio’s for opening to the public and future interpretation. The ABC Studio space consists of four rooms, a range of old audio equipment, hubs, small items, furniture, TV backdrops and soundproofing.

Condition

The studios were found as they had been left when the building was vacated in 1988.

Rooms contained a lot of grime, scratches, marks, ingrained dust, with a large amount of decayed acoustic foam on the walls, plus a range of dusty and dirty equipment, furniture and carpet.

In addition, many items stored there did not seem to belong to the studio.

Treatment

  • Electrical wiring and fixtures were tested and made safe.
  • Carpets vacuumed, and decayed foam debris manually removed.
  • Timber desks, shelving, built-in seats, and doors were cleaned, losses to timber were infilled and colour-matched, and Tyvek dust covers were applied to seat cushions.
  • Decayed acoustic foam was removed from all surfaces, and Corflute backing boards installed.
  • Carpets were vacuumed and cleaned.
  • Fragile painted areas cleaned with caution, and damaged paint edges consolidated.
  • Ceiling vents and tiles were cleaned, and broken tiles were repaired or replaced.
  • Steel lighting tracks were realigned.
  • Cables and equipment racking were cleaned, lubricated, stabilised and tagged.
  • Large Wiring Hubs were cleaned and inspected for hazardous materials.
  • Paper ephemera, stickers, handwritten markings were cleaned, stabilised and protected
  • The TV studio backdrop was cleaned, repaired and retouched.
  • Brass door hardware was cleaned, corrosion removed, and waxed.
  • Ceiling LIGHTS were cleaned and repaired
  • Wall paper was re-adhered.

Outcome

The public can now visit the old ABC studios to experience the tiny space from which big stories were broadcast.
