Overview

ICS was engaged by Old Parliament House to advise on how to protect the heritage rubber and parquetry flooring that was deteriorating.

In 1988 the new Parliament House opened, and today, Old Parliament House serves as the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House, showcasing the heritage of Australian democracy.

Condition

Trial stage

ICS identified Flotex flooring as a suitable option.  It is a textile carpet with hard-wearing, durable characteristics that can be imprinted with any image.  Its chemically stable, acid-free backing made it ideal for visually reproducing the original OPH floor surface while protecting the original from further foot traffic.

A trial has been undertaken to assess the longevity and wearing of the Flotex, along with monitoring its stability and assessing if there are any effects to the original floor underneath.

The initial install was in two stair landings on the lower floor at the front of Old Parliament House.  These spaces incorporate a section of original 1920’s blue rubber flooring, surrounded with original timber flooring.

Outcome

Flotex was installed directly over the original flooring, free-floating, with no adhesives used to secure the mat to the underlying floor.

The two areas will be continually assessed with a view to implementing the solution in other high traffic public areas of the House, to protect the original floor surfaces, whilst maintaining the same look and feel.
