Cataloging and condition assessment of the Fred Ward furniture collection

Overview

Fred Ward was Australia’s leading modernist furniture designer in the 1930’s

Fred Ward was Australia’s pre-eminent 20th Century furniture designer, having established himself as Australia’s leading modernist furniture designer in the 1930’s with Myers, and then more industrial design after WWII.  He established the Australian National University (ANU) Design Unit and oversaw the fabrication of furniture andinterior design in the campus.  He also designed furniture for the Reserve Bank of Australia, the Australian Academy of Sciences (the Shine Dome), Admiralty house, and the National Library of Australia.

The ANU Fred Ward collection, containing over 3,000 pieces of furniture, was damaged in a Canberra hail storm in 2023. Subsequently the whole collection was moved into 42 large shipping containers for storage.

ICS was engaged by ANU to carry out a cataloguing and condition assessment of the valuable collection.

Condition

The Challenges

  • The collection was large, with over 3,000 individual pieces of furniture that needed to be catalogued and assessed for potential damage by a conservator.
  • With storage across 42 shipping containers, the logistical challenge was to remove all items from their individual containers for conservation assessment, cataloguing and photography, and then return them to their correct location for ongoing storage.

Treatment

Outcomes

  • ICS conservators photographed and assessed each piece of furniture. In addition, each item was catalogued and tagged with accession numbers.
  • A report was then compiled for ANU to outline the treatment options. This report provided details of each individual piece of furniture, including accession number, current storage location, photographs, and a condition assessment rating. This rating determines the urgency for treatment and includes proposed treatment methodologies.
  • The report enabled ANU to utilise the data for nsurance purposes, and prioritise potential treatments based on conservation recommendations.
