Condition

Decorative Ceiling Paper, Entry Vestibule: Two areas of the ceiling paper adhesive were failing, causing delamination from the substrate. The border paint was very fragile, causing paint loss. The ceiling had significant surface dirt, and fly spots.

Ground Floor Columns: The eight columns in the Private Residence Hall exhibited significant plaster cracking, likely due to dry or fluctuating environmental conditions. Some areas showed delamination which caused surface bumps.

First Floor Columns: The eight columns in the Private Residence Hall had significant plaster render cracks, possibly due to dry or fluctuating environmental conditions.

Treatment

Decorative Ceiling Paper and Entry Vestibule:

  • The ceiling paper was dry-cleaned using a 3-stage method of brush-vacuuming and smoke sponges to remove loose surface debris.
  • Fly spots were removed manually to ensure no further damage was caused.
  • The ceiling paper and paint were stabilised using an acrylic adhesive with gentle pressure from below to aid adhesion.
  • Losses were filled and in-painted with pastels and acrylic paint to match the surrounding areas.

Ground Floor and First-floor Columns:

  • Injection holes were drilled regularly along cracks, and debris cleared from the holes.
  • A medium was injected into drill sites and along cracks to reattach plaster to masonry.
  • Where possible, clamps were applied to ease the delaminating plaster back to the masonry substrate.
  • An acrylic adhesive was injected into drill holes to further consolidate the plaster back to the masonry.
  • The drill holes and cracks were filled and sanded back to reduce the visual impact.
