State Theatre Conservation of Butterfly Room

The Butterfly Room is one of the highly decorated rooms at the State theatre. ICS was engaged to uncover the original Butterfly Room decorations and return the whole room to its original intended appearance.

King William III Delft Plate

Dating back to 1691, this rare tin-glazed earthenware ceramic plate was made to commemorate King William III who ruled England, Scotland and Ireland with his wife Queen Mary II from 1689-1702. It features a portrait of the king, flanked by his initials ‘KW’ and surrounded by a floral border. The plate has a lobed-style edge and is decorated with blue, yellow and green on a white background – common with Delftware from this period.

Matthew Flinders Statue

Matthew Flinders (1774-1814) was one of the most talented navigators and chart-makers of his day. A captain in the Royal Navy, in 1798 he sailed from Sydney and circumnavigated Van Diemens Land (Tasmania), proving that it was an island. From 1801 to 1803 he circumnavigated mainland Australia, charting the coastline as he went. In 1925 a statue was erected in his honour outside the State Library of NSW in Sydney.

AMP Sheep

ICS was engaged by AMP Capital Investors to carry out a condition inspection and provide options for the conservation of the Hinchcliff Wool Store Sheep. This resulted in ICS managing the replication, gilding and installation of the sheep back in its original location on the roof of the Wool Store.

US Guadalcanal Flag

The American flag was the first on the beach during the Battle of Guadalcanal (1942) during World War II. It was brought to Australia by Colonel Cavanaugh and presented to Ivanhoe RSL, VIC in 1957.

Penleigh Boyd Oil Painting

Penleigh Boyd (1890 – 1923) was well-known for his landscape paintings, which skilfully capture the transient effects of light. He often painted en plein air and was particularly influenced by the work of Turner, McCubbin and fellow artist E. Phillips Fox.

Portrait of The Hon. Dame Quentin Bryce

This portrait of Australia’s Governor-General from 2008-2014 – the Honourable Dame Quentin Bryce AD CVO – was painted at the end of her term by acclaimed portraitist Ralph Heimans (b.1970). It was commissioned for the Historic Memorials Collection by Australian Parliament House in Canberra, where it is currently on public display.

Frederica Josephson & Lady Mary Fitzroy quilts

Stitched in the mid-1800s, these two heritage quilts – held by the National Trust – are important pieces in the rich history of Australian quilting. In 1853 Frederica Mary Josephson (1832-1907) married Emanuel Josephson, son of the noted convict silversmith Jacob Josephson (1773-1845). Until 1873 the Josephsons lived at Riverview Cottage in Longueville, Sydney, where it is believed Frederica made the quilt. Consisting of a complex pattern of hexagonal stars and radiating diamonds, considerable thought and care has clearly gone into its construction.

When a fire broke out in the Rare Books room of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music Library in 2014 the fire brigade responded within minutes and quickly used foam to extinguish it.

Oscar Namatjira (1922-1991) was a member of the Hermannsburg School, their art characterised by the use of watercolours to depict the luminous colours of the outback.

Two Rosellas watercolour

The restored watercolour was painted by Neville Henry Cayley (1854-1903) who was particularly famous for ‘What Bird is That?’, Australia’s first comprehensive bird field guide published in 1931.
