A great opportunity for a recent Graduate or Emerging Paper Conservator who is genuinely passionate about hands-on treatment work, dedicated to improving their craft, and keen to grow into an exceptional conservator.
At International Conservation Services, Australia’s largest private conservation practice, we work on huge range of cultural materials every day — from rare books and archival documents to fine art on paper, maps, photographs, and more. In a busy lab, we pursue excellence with focus and care. If you love being at the bench, solving complex problems with your colleagues, learning from every project, and pushing your technical and creative limits, this position is right for you.
THE ROLE
It's a dynamic role that rewards attention to detail, initiative, and a genuine love for the craft of paper conservation. It’s not about ticking boxes; it’s about building real skills, confidence and judgment to deliver the best client outcomes. You’ll spend most of your time doing hands-on conservation treatments, under expert guidance at first, then increasingly independently as you demonstrate mastery.
Reporting to the Head of Paper Conservation, you can expect to:
- Carry out detailed paper and book conservation interventions: tear repairs, stain reduction, deacidification, humidification, lining, backing removal, and more, always aiming for the highest ethical and reversible standards (AICCM Code of Ethics & Practice, Burra Charter).
- Develop a deep, intuitive feel for materials and techniques through repetition, observation and thoughtful experimentation.
- Document your work with precision: photography, clear treatment records, and concise reporting that respects the object and the client.
- Prepare workspaces, materials and equipment, handle objects with care, maintain the lab, and assist with on-site projects, packing, transport and disaster response.
- Help refine methodologies with the team and suggest ways to achieve better outcomes.
- Grow across disciplines: support other areas of conservation when opportunities arise and broaden your expertise.
WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR
- Recent graduate or emerging conservator with tertiary qualifications in materials conservation, ideally with an interest in book conservation.
- At least 1 year of practical post-graduation paper conservation experience, with strong hands-on technical skills and a passion for bench work.
- Genuine enthusiasm for learning complex challenges, mastering tools, and becoming an outstanding paper conservator.
- Excellent eye for detail, steady hands, and confidence using hand tools, basic workshop equipment and lifting aids safely and accurately.
- Clear and effective written and verbal communication.
- Ability to work independently, prioritise and thrive in a dynamic team environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative spirit: you enjoy learning from others, sharing insights and helping to achieve excellent outcomes.
- Commitment to Work Health & Safety, ethical practice, and professional growth.
- Australian citizenship or residency.
- AICCM membership (or eligibility).
- Full Australian driver’s licence (essential).
WHAT YOU’LL GAIN
- Expert mentorship focused on developing your technical mastery and professional judgment.
- Exposure to a wide variety of projects that build depth and versatility.
- Generous professional development allowance to support training, conferences and skill-building.
- A supportive, high-performing team environment with great people who value excellence and initiative.
- Mobile phone allowance.
- Professional membership fees allowance.
- Flexible working arrangements where possible.
- The chance to shape your career in Australia’s largest private conservation provider.
